| Dragons Team Up With Some of ABL's Best Locals |
| |
On July 16, 2012, the Professional Basketball Alumni Association will bring their team to Malaysia for an exhibition match against AirAsia Asean Basketball League’s (ABL) top offensive team, the Westports Malaysia Dragons. The star studded lineup will include six-time champion, Scottie Pippen, five-time champion, Dennis Rodman, four-time champion, Horace Grant, six-time All-Star, Mitch Richmond, and dribbling & passing extraordinaire, Jason Williams.
The Malaysians from the Dragons team will include Guganeswaran Batumalai, Kuek Tian Yuan, John Ng Yeo Seng, Kwaan Yoong Jing, Loh Shee Fai, Chee Li Wei, and Satyaseelan Kuppusamy. To help promote the ABL, the Dragons have reached out to other teams from the league to complete their rosters for the event. Joining the Dragons will be 2012 ABL Champion and 2011 ABL Local Player of the Year, Mario Wuysang from the Indonesia Warriors.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to play with the Dragons and NBA legends,” said Mario. “I think it is great for the ABL as far as attracting a broader fan base in this region. People in the ASEAN region grew up watching these stars and now, they will be able to see their heroes in this side of the world. I think that’s awesome. I would like to thank the Dragons and their owners for giving me this opportunity.”
Mario led the ABL in 3-pointers during the season and was a runner up for ABL Local Player of the Year. He averaged 12.9 points and 4.0 assists per game for the Warriors this year. |

The remaining roster will also include 2010 ABL Champion, Robert Wainwright from AirAsia Philippine Patriots, Ratdech Kruatiwa from the Bangkok Cobras, Desmond Oh Wei Jie from Jobstreet.com Singapore Slingers, and 2011 ABL Champion and 2010 ABL Local Player of the Year, Attaporn Lertmalaiporn from the Chang Thailand Slammers.
Wainwright will add some size to help the Dragons match up to the taller alumni players. He had game highs of 11 points and 3 rebounds in the loss to the Dragons on 29 April. During crucial moments of the game, he hit three big 3-pointers to keep the game close.
Kruatiwa averaged 9.5 points during the season, hitting a 3-pointer in all but two of his games. He was second in the league in 3-pointers made. He hit six 3-pointers in two games this season and five in another, but none were bigger than the one he sank from half-court to beat the Dragons on 1 February.
Desmond was a starter for Jobstreet.com Singapore Slingers during the season. He is known for his pressure lockdown defense but also averaged 5.0 points per game for the Slingers. He scored a season high 16 points, adding 3 steals and 2 blocks against the Slammers on 18 January.
Attaporn led all locals in scoring in the ABL’s first season and was named Local Player of the Year. This season against the Cobras on 21 January, he scored 19 points in just 23 minutes. He averaged 5.9 points per game during the season and will add athleticism to the Dragons squad.
“I’m excited to get the chance to play with these players,” said Dragons’ captain, Guganeswaran Batumalai. “We often play against them in the ABL, SEA Games, and other tournaments but this time, we can suit up as one team. I know that playing with them will allow us to give the fans a good show.”
Team Dragons will now have players from each of the three ABL championships to match up against the alumni, a team of stars with a total of fifteen NBA championships.
“A lot of people dream about playing against these great players,” said Guga. “I hope it helps younger players train harder to get the opportunity to take part in these events.”
The All Star Game, held at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam, will commence at 8:00 PM on 16 July 2012. Doors will open at 7:00 PM. Tickets for the All Star Game is available on AirAsia RedTix.
